Since 2023, the PUCP has been part of the capacity development project Innovative Mobility Attracting Tools for Latin America (I-MAT), funded by the European Union. This brings together nine universities from six countries with the aim of promoting the use of innovative tools to promote international mobility, both student and staff, in Latin America.

From May 7 to 10, 2024, the PUCP hosted training sessions – one of the different activities of this project. During these days, representatives of our University and the Universidad Católica San Pablo (Arequipa) met to share good practices and discuss innovative strategies to promote the international mobility of students, professors and administrative staff. Trainers from the AGH University of Krakow (Poland) and the Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal) guided these days.

This training session has allowed us, the participating universities, to dedicate valuable time to reflect together on the use of tools and management processes that we have implemented to promote the international mobility of students, professors and staff."

Improving internationalization strategies

The four-day agenda covered key topics such as the internationalization of the curriculum, the management of student mobility, exchanges of academic and non-academic staff, the use of technological tools, and strategies for the dissemination of internationalization opportunities. Participants engaged in interactive work groups such as role-plays, simulations and problem-solving activities regarding international mobility.

“This training session has allowed us, the participating universities, to dedicate valuable time to reflect together on the use of tools and management processes that we have implemented to promote the international mobility of students, professors and administrative staff,” commented César Miranda, coordinator of international development at DARI and coordinator of the I-MAT project at PUCP.

«During the training week I had the opportunity to learn more about Latin American universities, what they are doing and what they are accomplishing [in terms of internationalization]. It was really enriching to be at the PUCP, to share with the participants and learn with them,” said Lucas Itida, trainer at the Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal).

About Innovative Mobility Attracting Tools for Latin America (I-MAT)

Starting in 2023, and for a period of three years, nine higher education institutions, from six different countries, will be working to identify the development needs and strategic priorities regarding internationalization of three Latin American countries: Brazil, Colombia and Peru, from an innovative perspective supported by technological tools. By combining the above with the relevant experience of the participating institutions of the European countries (Lithuania, Poland and Portugal), it is expected that I-MAT will be able to enhance the internationalization efforts of all those associated with the project. This is possible thanks to funding obtained from the European Commission’s Erasmus+ program.

Following steps

As part of their different activities, the higher education institutions partners of the I-MAT project have generated a catalog of tools and good practices in internationalization of higher education, which will soon be made available to the general public through the website of I-MAT. In addition, a mobile application “I-MOB” will be launched, which aims to enhance the visibility of the different opportunities and modalities of internationalization available to students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the universities associated with the project.

Finally, these tools and advances will be socialized in massive events in Brazil, Colombia and Peru during 2025.
