Change of migratory status

About the procedure

International students who arrive at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) must carefully read the following information to learn about their change of migratory status in Peru

  • The procedure is personal and is the sole responsibility of each student. The PUCP does not perform any management nor is it an intermediary, we only accompany and guide students in the process.
  • According to Peruvian university law, it is possible to carry out university studies in Peru having entered the country with the migratory status of tourist; however, those who arrive in Peru as tourists must then change their migratory status from “tourist” to “training” (student) with the National Superintendence of Migration.
  • The student can request the migratory status of TEMPORARY training or RESIDENT training, depending on the duration of the studies in Peru. If they stay only one semester, the temporary status corresponds and if it is one year, the Resident status corresponds.
  • The procedure is carried out through the Digital Migration Agency. (Agency link: https://agenciavirtual.migraciones.gob.pe/agencia-virtual/identidad)
  • Those who are in an irregular situation due to the expiration of the period of stay granted by the Peruvian authority, have 30 calendar days to regularize their immigration status. Regularization is admissible only once. Excessive stay at the time of leaving Peruvian territory is punishable by a fine calculated for each day of excess.

Resident formation

  • The change from Migratory Status to Resident Formation allows a stay in Peru of 365 days, extendable for periods of 365 days.
  • To review the required documents, click here.
  • All documents issued abroad must be apostilled. We suggest that students find out in advance which institution in their country provides the Hague apostille. In addition, if a document is not in Spanish, a translation must be requested from a certified translator recognized by the Peruvian State. Click here to review the list of translators who meet this condition. The translation can be requested once you are in Peru so that you do not have to make payments from abroad.
  • No document is presented to Immigration in physical format. All are uploaded in PDF format to the Virtual Immigration Agency. (Virtual Agency…: https://agenciavirtual.migraciones.gob.pe/agencia-virtual/identidad)
  • The process ends when the student picks up their alien card at the Immigration office, so this process is not 100% virtual. After uploading their documents on the web, they will have to make an appointment for the registration of biometric data at the Immigration office and also to pick up their card. Since it is a process that has multiple steps, we suggest doing it with the corresponding advance notice, that is, not waiting until the days of permission as a tourist are about to end.
  • With the approved Resident Training condition, multiple entries into the territory of Peru are authorized. Each time they go through immigration control, they must present their card to identify themselves. The migratory status of Resident Training is lost due to absence from Peruvian territory without authorization to exit for residents for more than 183 consecutive days within a period of 365 days counted from the first exit from the territory. It is also lost due to absence for more than 365 consecutive days within a period of 2 years counted from the first departure from the territory.
  • The procedure has a cost of S/. 162.50, but it must be considered that there are other payments that the student must assume, such as the issuance of his/her criminal record document in his/her country, the apostille in his/her country, the translation (if necessary), the International Exchange Form at the Interpol office – Lima and transportation costs to go to his/her appointments.

Temporary formation

  • The Change of Immigration Status to Temporary Training allows a stay in Peru of a maximum of 180 days. Once the application is approved, first, the student receives 90 days of permission and, 30 days before the end of this period, if necessary, he/she can request the extension of the other 90 days.
  • Here you can review the list of required documents.
  • This procedure does not request any documents from the foreigner and all are presented virtually through the Digital Migration Agency.
  • The response with the approval of the application is also virtual and is received through the Electronic Mailbox of the Digital Agency.
  • Once they have the approval, they can make multiple entries within the Peruvian territory and their Temporary Training status (student) will not be altered. In this case, they are not given any card, they keep the passport as an identity document.
  • Please note that Immigration applies a fine for each day of excess for not requesting a visa extension within the validity period, so you must request it before the end of your first 90 days as a student.
  • The procedure has a cost of S/. 118, but it must be considered that there are other payments that the student must assume, which are the International Exchange Form at the Interpol office – Lima and the cost of transportation to go and pick up that document.
