PUCP is the only Peruvian university that has a representative of the German academic exchange service. For this reason, here DAAD Mag reader Mari Dohrmann tells us about the different services that this institution provides for the benefit of our community, including free German classes, advice on scholarships and talks.

Our community has a greater approach to the German culture and language, and to the scholarship opportunities to study in Germany that this institution offers. And since September of last year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) returned to the PUCP campus. Thus, the PUCP welcomes the only representative of the DAAD in Peru: Mag. Mari Dohrmann, anthropologist and migration specialist, who will serve in this role for 2 years.

The DAAD has more scholarships than you think. There are some aimed at postgraduate studies, areas of specific knowledge or also shorter stays. They are all a good opportunity to make an exchange and continue learning.”

Study in Germany: free language classes

Having DAAD representation on our campus provides many benefits for the internationalization of our university community, including being able to access free course modules to learn German. One is aimed at basic level students – those who do not have any knowledge of the language – and another, conversation, for students with an intermediate or advanced level of German. Both were taught for the first time in the semester, in April.

“There was a lot of interest and approximately 700 people registered for the 20 places in the basic German course,” highlights Dohrmann. New courses will open at the end of May. To do this, the call has been sent to our students by email so they can apply using a Google form.

Personalized attention about scholarships

Every Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at noon, Dohrmann provides information and advice for our students, teachers and researchers about DAAD scholarships as well as study opportunities, generally, in Germany, in his office located on the 12th floor of the McGregor building. The reader tells us that interested people can come to her office during that time, but if they prefer to schedule a space, they can send her a message to her email: mari.dohrmann@daad-lektorat.de

“The DAAD has more scholarships than you think. There are some aimed at postgraduate studies, areas of specific knowledge or, also, shorter stays. They are all a good opportunity to make an exchange and continue learning,” highlights Dohrmann. To do this, it is advisable to enter the website of the German academic exchange service and review the different calls.

Likewise, Dohrmann also gives talks at different PUCP faculties throughout the year. You can keep up to date with them on the Instagram of our Academic Office of International Affairs (DARI in spanish).

Mutual academic exchange

Dohrman highlights that, in his first months in office, he dedicated himself to getting to know and finding his way around the University. “In this, my first full semester, I focus on providing advice and information on academic mobility to Germany, as well as teaching German courses and one at the Faculty of Social Sciences,” he explains. Being the only DAAD reader in the country, she points out that her task of disseminating information about this service is not subordinated exclusively to the PUCP but, in general, to the universities and study centers of the country.

In addition, the DAAD is represented in our country through its ambassadors, who are teachers and researchers who have studied or spent stays in Germany. At PUCP we have three: the professors of the Law Department Dr. Jorge Luis León and Dr. Tania Zúñiga; as well as the professor of the Department of Sciences Dr. Rolf Grieseler.

Finally, the DAAD reader highlights that her academic interests focus on intercultural relations, gender and inequality: “I am very interested in delving deeper into these topics at PUCP and sharing what I know with students and researchers here.” In this way, she not only provides information on academic exchange and dissemination of German culture, but she has also been learning and collaborating in the generation of knowledge at our University.
